Since he was interracting with a universe different from his own, he knew that there was a long line of new protocols waiting to be set into place in the future...
"So. That's what happened?" Rodimus asked, his back to Rad. What he was thinking only Rodimus and Primus knew.
It made waiting for an answer unusually tense.
"The spacebridge works as it's expected to, if what Hoist and Grapple told me is true, so there's no problems there."
"No sir," Rad said.
"This Cheetor who volunteered came back safely."
"Yes sir."
"Everything went smoothly prior to the operation."
Rad tensed. Now he had an idea of what Rodimus was thinking.
"Yes, sir."
"Before the mission started everything was a success."
Rodimus had a way about him that made you mentally prepare yourself for the other ball bearing to drop.
"Yes ... sir..."
He waited. He didn't speak. He was waiting for Rodimus to speak and tell him his verdict.
He had an idea what it would be.
"While I commend you on a successful rescue mission, however..."
Here it comes...
"...I'm afraid that for now, I cannot permit future ventures of this nature without serious assessment beforehand."
"Sir?"
"One Autobot suffered considerable injury to his lower legs."
"Yes but—"
"And what you describe as an example of a data-based life-form, known as 'Bob', was hit by Unicronian energy, and was in danger of extinguishing if he remained in his spark form if the Optimus of that world had not successfully brought him back to this Milliways you've told me about in the past."
"Yes but—"
Rodimus turned around. His expression was serious.
Rad actually took a step back.
"I will not be allowing such projects to be carried out in the future. Unless the situation merits a Code X or similar high danger rating, there will be no future projects like this."
"But Prime, it was Code X. If we didn't stop Nemesis Breaker we'd—"
"I am not debating the seriousness of the situation. I am however debating how, under your leadership, two individuals were injured in the course of duty, and for that reason there will be no future projects of this nature carried out."
There was a pause. Rodimus was waiting for Rad to protest.
"And the spacebridge.... What became of it?"
"Temporarily deactivated because of the Unicronian energy—"
"I'd like it to stay that way."
"Come again?"
"The spacebridge is to remain deactivated until I decide if it should be reactivated."
"And if Optimus objects?"
"I suspect this Optimus Prime will be more than understanding of my reasons why, Rad. And I'm going to impress it upon you now that you will tell Optimus Prime what I've told you, and you will ensure that I get a response from him. Regardless of what it is."
Rodimus made it sound like he said, "regardless of what you want it to be".
"Is that understood?"
Rad was not really listening now...
"Rad?"
...he was thinking of doing something he'd never done before:
"Rad. I asked you a question..."
disobey his superior.
"Yes Rodimus. I'll tell him."
If I see him.
He'd made sure he had a copy of the spacebridge technical specifications as well as the programming back at the bar. A copy of the copy Rodimus, Hoist and Grapple had given him.
"Dismissed."
Optimus Prime might one day need that spacebridge again. And he'd need it to work...
